Employee Retention
If you are not concerned about the future of your knowledge workers, you soon will be.
As baby boomers age out of the workplace there will be a shortage of high-end knowledge workers until the boomer's echo generation develops the skills needed to replace them. If you are in a people-intensive business of innovating, building relationships or solving problems, the implications for your business are staggering.
A few years ago our leadership team at Goodmans identified this demographic phenomenon as one of our biggest risks for future success. We assembled a team of partners including Herman Miller, Kronos and the Sandler Sales Institute to help us become a best-in-class example of how to recruit and retain high-end knowledge workers.
We developed our plan under the theory that compensation is a limited tool that can easily be overcome by a competing employer, so we needed to find a way to compete on other elements that are more difficult for another company to recreate. These elements include:
- Providing a first-class work environment
- Helping employees maintain a proper work/life balance
- Nurturing the ambitions of employees with high aspirations
